Rare Textiles of the past: SG27
This textile was created for a wedding dowry in the small island of Sumbawa, Indonesia.
It was purchased 30 years ago but is in perfect condition because it was stored in a A.C storage for all 30 years till we collected our boxes of artifacts to sell the contents, so this piece is both old and new, made 3 decades ago but never used. I just took pictures of it on our deck, it is red burgundy with gold threads and you only see 1/2 on each side as it was sewn together to make a shawl but it can be separated if so wished: sewn as a shawl, it is 75\" x 23\" but if you remove the seam, it will be a flat piece in one piece of 75\" X 48\"
The brocade was entirely handmade from the hand spinning to the hand weaving to the hand embroideredneedlework: minute time-consuming intricate and perfect metallic embroidery motifs! Takeslong months to achieve, sometimes years! Never 2 of those prized cloths arealike!
This is a unique authentic collector dowry textile that was to be used for an important wedding ceremony, hard to find today especially older ones and in perfect condition as this is.Handmade dowry textiles are passed from one generation to the next and used mostlyfor ceremonial purposes because of their worth. They attest to the wealth ofthe owner.

Handspunsilk & cotton blendandgold handembroideries. Burgundy red background. SG27
Songket is a fabric that belongs to the family of brocade textiles. It is hand woven in silk or cotton, and intricately patterned with gold or silver threads. The metallic threads stand out against the background cloth to create a shimmering effect. In the weaving process the metallic threads are inserted in between the silk or cotton weft (latitudinal) threads. The term songket comes from the Malay Indonesian word sungkit, which means \"to hook\". It has something to do with the method of songket making; to hook and pick a group of threads, and then slip the gold threads in it. The word menyongket means \"to embroider with gold or silver threads\":. Songket is a luxury product traditionally worn during ceremonial occasions as sarong, shoulder cloths or head ties. Tanjak or Songket headdresses were worn at the courts of the Malay Sultanates and nobility. Traditionally women and adolescent girls wove songket and traditionally-patterned textiles embodied a system of interpretable emblems to the few that were able to create them and wear them.
