Mexican pewter has been a favorite collectible for the past 30 years or more. There is usually much detail in the heavy cast molds, is very attractive, and can come highly polished or matte. The highly polished pieces resemble fine sterling silver. It is very practical to use, requiring no polishing like silver plate pieces. Mexican pewter (heavy cast aluminum alloy metal) will never dull.
History of the Virgin: The image is venerated in Mexico and the United States. The small town of San Juan de Los Lagos is one of the top three most pilgrimaged sites in Mexico. The sanctuary's history begins in 1542 when Father Miguel de Bologna, a Spanish priest, brought a statue of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception to the village. That year, the daughter of some local Indian peasants fell ill. Her parents prayed for her health and she recovered. Following this miracle, the statue began to be venerated by an increasing number of pilgrims, including Indians, Spanish and Mestizos. The statue of the virgin was installed in the local church in 1769. Annually, today, over one million pilgrimage to the site.
