Mexican Signal Cannon"authentic Black Powder" 19th Cent. 9 3/4" Almost 4 Pounds For Sale
I found this at an estate sale about 3 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. I don't know if that's relevant but it might be since this cannon may have come northward, up the coast. I did what research I could and asked questions about this cannon and it's condition. The Mexican flag, with an eagles right talon crushing a serpent, was established in 1823; so I know it isn't an 18th century piece. The trunnions are bent as you can see. Looking from above, you can see that they are bent uniformally I spoke to my neighbor Dan, who is expert in the field of firearms and knows alot about metals and their various strengths to see what he thought about this condition. He believes that if the trunnions were held in a secure enough carriage, let's say in heavy "iron sleeves", the recoil from an extra large load of black powder could have created these bends. The brass trunnions may have given. It appears a sleeve was added. You can see it at the end of the muzzle. I don't know if the bore became more exact because of that and also led to the possible strength of the exploding load. A lot of this conjecture and you may have other ideas. The cannon is 2 inches at the breech, 1 1/2 inches across the muzzle and has a 5/8 inch bore. Of course, this cannon is not meant to fire projectiles.
