We are pleased to offer this exceptionally large and fine six piece Mexican sterling silver shell and scroll tea service.
Signed by a Mexico City shop (eagle with 1 to centre). Name of the shop unknown to us. Bearing the earliest Mexican eagle guarantee, suggesting the set was made between 1948-1952.
Classic tapering urn form.
The shoulder with beautifully applied and hand chased shell and scroll decoration.
Bold scallop shell atop twin leaf. Alternating with inverted leaf and twin florette. United by twin vine streams.
Well cast and fit covers, with raised ovoid and globe finial.
The oval serving tray with conforming shell and scroll rim. Strikingly cast shell and florete cap handles, rising from spread vine terminal.
This extremely fine Mexican sterling silver shell and scroll teapot is 9 1/2 inches handle to spout and 37 1/2 standard ounces.
The coffee pot 10 1/2 inches tall and 37 1/2 standard ounces.
The sugar vase is 7 1/2 inches handle to handle and 20 1/2 standard ounces.
Cream jug is 6 1/4 inches and 12 1/2 standard ounces.
Waste bowl is 4 1/2 inches 10 standard ounces.
Serving tray 26 inches handle to handle 16 across and 99 1/2 standard ounces.
The entire service is 217 standard ounces.
Hallmarked as shown, to each piece and all pieces matching hallmarks.
Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The shell and scroll work retains its original crisp detail. Handles secure and with original heat stops. Covers close flush. Few tiny scuffs to tray centre from careful use, free of any deep scars.
