Why items were stamped "Foreign" and not made in Germany or Made in Western German. Here is what I found...……..
What does the word "foreign" mean stamped on items. I heard somewhere it was legally required for imported items in the early 20th century, but which years? I also heard it was for German items after WW1, because people wouldn't buy stuff which said Made in Germany.
Which is it?
I am pretty sure that this relates to British trade policy in the days when we still had an Empire. Goods produced within the Imperial territories were marked as 'Empire made', to distinguish them from 'Foreign' goods. It had nothing to do specifically with Germany, but resulted from a policy known as 'Imperial preference'. This continued in a different form during the Commonwealth years, but was brought to an abrupt halt when we joined the EU in 1973.
This is what I found when I google your question. I can assure you that the items are not repro's and are from Mid Century. I am also selling Card Seed Packets New Old Stock from the 1920's they produced thousands of these packets to be filled with seeds later. They look in great new shape because they were never used and properly stored away all these am cleaning out my attic of my old Vermont farm house and will be listing many other Christmas items, such as light sets, Shiny Brite glass ornaments, tree toppers, blow molds, plastics candy holders and other items from the 1940’s-1960’s Have been collecting for years and need to clean it out. Please check back often as I will be posting new listings.
