INDIGO KATAZOME PANEL
-- Bengara Kiri-tuskushi --
Splendid panel of indigo katazome cotton, dating to the late Edo or early Meiji period (mid 19C). It features a pattern of very small go-san kiri, the stylized flowers and leaves of the paulownia tree. Kiri is yet another auspicious image. The Asian phoenix will only come from heaven to earth during the time of a just and noble ruler, and will only alight on a blooming kiri. The actual tree grows quickly and straight, and its wood is very lightweight; it also keeps moisture low and repels insects, and for these reasons it was traditionally planted when a daughter was born so that, when she married, there would be ample wood to make a chest for her take to her husband\'s house. This panel is exemplary of the pinnacle of katazome dyeing in the 19C, with extremely fine stencil-cut lines and excellent alignment. It was first resisted and dyed in botanical indigo, then stenciled with ganryou surface pigments of ferrous bengara and a tannin-rich black. Handspun cotton is in outstanding condition for its age, with an asagi indigo ground is very bright, and the surface pigment colors are still crisp and clear. An exceptional addition to any serious collection of antique katazome textiles....Measures 67 cm x 34 cmClick on any of the photos below
