This custom built racer is a "round wire" version based on Mike Steube's "flat wire" car featured in the April 15, 1969 Model Racing Journal Newsletter. Mike had the field covered with a 15 lap lead at the Mura Spectacular at Don's Raceway in Downey, CA. He met with disaster in the last heat but still managed to finish second in the main.
Mike's super clean design is a classic 2-rail, plumber on the arm, can drive style anglewinder with 1 1/4" solid drop arm and solid pans. It's an 1/8" axle chassis with ball bearings in the rear end.
The motor is a super tricked out Mura A-can 16D with a Best O The West custom wound armature by Monty Ohren. It's a single 25 wound on a modern blank and comm. The endbell is a Mura unmeltable with modern C-can style brushes and hardware. The magnets are in Mura's Semi-Can shim setup. The 36D brushes are shunted and the brush springs have Teflon insulation.
The gears are a Cobra spur gear with a Tradeship pinion, the guide is a Jet Flag with quick change braid and the lead
wires are REHco, the front wheels and tires are Riggen's with Halibrand wheel inserts, the rears are modern but the rubber is hard and are for display only. Install whatever rears work best for your home track and she'll be ready to race.
The body is a reproduction Dynamic McLaren MK8 with a candy red "fogged" Kovac's style paint job. Period air control helps keep the car planted as you punch the bank.
You can really run this car! It's got great power and handling.
