Description:

12 RATTLE SNAKE 3 DIMENSIONAL FIGURAL SPURS

2 DIFFERENT PATTERNS OF RATTLE SNAKES

SILVER INLAID, ENGRAVED, GOLD WASHED

12 CUT OUTS, TOOLED PITIADO STRAPS

MINT CONDITION !

Figural objects, such as spurs, bits and other items, have always been "Top of the Line"; the most distinctive, unusual, scarce and expensive to create and own. In spurs, there are only a few figural designs; Eagle shanks, heel band & shank bird designs, and, of course, Rattlesnake motifs. There are "Single Snake" designs (just the heel band or shank), "Double Snake" designs (heel band, shank or buttons), and the most ornate and desirable, the "Triple snake" designs; i.e., the heel bands, shanks and buttons all have matching a Snake Motif. Spurs that are "Double Patterned"; i.e., have different patterns on the outside and inside, are all custom spurs. This fancy two pattern double silver mounted & engraving found on custom made spurs was expensive, and allowed the wearer to simply change the spur straps to opposite buttons to have either side of the heel bands worn toward the outside; thus, having two different spur designs in the same pair of spurs. This is a Fine pair of Vintage, Pristine Mint, unused, high quality, hand made custom fancy double heel band patterned, with 12 individual cutouts, hand silver inlaid & hand engraved, 3 dimensional 12 Snake spurs, with fine craftsmanship and original bluing that have never been on a boot. This double pattern is much more work, more costly, and only found on a custom made to order pair of spurs. These spurs are painstakingly inlaid with dozens and dozens of hand chiseled inlays; then, meticulously inlaid with silver, hand engraved, gold washed, and then blued. Note that even when un unworn, untouched condition, gold wash is a light goldish coloring; hard to photograph, but very obvious to the naked eye. The overall quality is excellent, and done by the hands of Master craftsmen. Only a wealthy gentleman would have been able to commission such a fine pair of custom made spurs. This Snake pattern is a known earlier pattern done by Luna, the Maestro of South of the Border spurs. If this pair were Maker marked by Luna, they would be in the tens of thousands of $. These spurs are heavy for their size; 2 pounds 10 ounces. They are completely hand made in the old style; i.e., hand forged, hand filed, hand chiseled, hand filigreed & hand silver inlaid and engraved, gold washed, et al. Being handmade, the dimensions vary slightly. The inside measurement of the heel bands at the open end is about 2 7/8". These heavy duty spurs, measure about 5 7/8" long overall, with heavy 5/16" thick heel bands that are 1 1/4" tall. It is very difficult to chisel, inlay and engrave a curved surface like the outside and inside heel bands, shanks & buttons. The engraver used fine line engraving, stippled (textured) engraving, zig zag engraving and punch dot decoration for contrast. It is difficult to photograph, but the entire spurs; i.e., all of the silver inlays, are gold washed. This is only found on high end, custom made spurs. The gold is very delicate, and can be easily rubbed off. Unless the spurs are mint & unused, most gold washed spurs have only traces of the original finish. The outside heel bands have a coiled rattlesnake pattern with 3 cut outs and a double line of silver inlaid borders that are zig zag engraved & gold washed. This outside rattlesnake has crescent shaped scales; each hand chiseled, hand silver inlaid, and hand engraved with a stippled (textured) back ground and a center punch dot decoration, and gold washed. The snake head also has raised, gold washed silver eyes. The inside heel bands also have the same Rattlesnake design motif as the outside heel bands with 3 cut outs, but are delicately inlaid with 8 parallel silver inlaid & zig zag engraved line engravings that are gold washed; and the snake head also has raised gold washed silver eyes. The shanks are very wide, 3/4"; and the outside shanks have a hand chiseled, hand silver inlaid, hand engraved crescent shaped scales with textured backgrounds & punch dot decoration in a coiled 3 dimensional rattlesnake pattern, en suite with the outside heel band. The inside shanks have a hand chiseled, hand silver inlaid, hand zig zag engraved decoration in a 3 dimensional coiled rattlesnake pattern, en suite with the inside heel band. The outside swinging buttons are hand forged, about 1 1/4" across, hand chiseled, hand silver inlaid, hand engraved with crescent shaped scales, textured backgrounds & punch dot decoration in a 3 dimensional coiled rattlesnake pattern, with line engraved zig zag borders and gold washed; en suite with the heel band and shank. The inside swinging buttons are hand forged, about 1 1/4" across, hand chiseled, hand silver inlaid, hand zig zag engraved decorated in a 3 dimensional coiled rattlesnake pattern with 5 line engraved zig zag borders, and gold washed; en suite with the heel band. All the buttons are secured to the swingers with hand peened Iron pins. All 4 Iron button swingers are identical, with rounded ends as found on custom spurs. Both the inside and outside hand forged 8 tined Amozoc style rowels are silver inlaid & engraved. Each individual rowel tine is inlaid with a silver panel that is hand engraved with zig zag decoration and punch dot decorations; then gold washed. There are a total of 32 individual silver engraved panels on each rowel, for a total of 64 silver inlaid, engraved panels just on the rowels. As found on custom spurs, the tines taper slightly from center towards the ends in the side view, and taper slightly from the center to the tips in the top view. Being hand made, they vary slightly and are about 2 1/2" in diameter. The rowels have a distinctive chiming sound when spun. This is purposefully done by the Maker, and is found on custom made spurs. The outside rowel pins are bullet shaped with 6 triangular shaped silver inlays. The inside rowel pins have small silver domed washers. The overall bluing is gun bluing; the same bluing process found on firearms. South of the Border patrons have always like shiny, flashy, eye catching horse trappings & accoutrements. Spur & bit makers discovered in the 1950's that the gun blue was shiny and more showy than the traditional charcoal bluing; and thus began using this more eye appealing and flashy bluing on some of their spurs. All of the original bluing remains, including the inside of the heel bands. The inside heel bands are Maker marked B C MEX. I don't know much about this maker, but I know he was in business at least 25 years ago, like the well known makers Fleming and Vogt. These spur are in mint condition, but have some aging. There is light natural patina on the hand forged Iron button pins that show on the inside, and also show age inside the cutouts. There are some extremely light handling marks and minor darkening of some of the gold wash from handling. There is also a darkened spot on one of the spur strap ends from being in contact with the metal buckle, but is not distracting overall. These spurs are complete with fine, fancy leather spur straps that are deeply 3 dimensionally tooled in a flower and leaf pattern, lined in pig skin, with pitiado (cactus fiber) hand embroidered borders. The pitiado border goes all the way to the narrow end of the spur strap with nickel plated buckles. These finely detailed investment spurs are in connoisseur condition; i.e., never cleaned, polished, nor ever been on a boot. And, I have left these in untouched, as found condition that collectors love to see; and not even treated the leather straps. These fancy, finely inlaid, engraved Gold washed figural 12 Rattle snake Investment grade spurs come from South of the Border, down Old Mexico way; and are quickly becoming a lost art in hand made spurs. Very few artisans have the knowledge and experience to create a Masterpiece such as figural 12 Rattlesnake spurs; they prefer to make more $ making standard patterns and more quantity of spurs in the same amount of time. If you traveled to Sothern Mexico to have a custom pair of spurs made today, it would cost at least $2,500. This pair is almost identical to a different pair of "Triple Snake" spurs in a very similar pattern that was also gold washed that I gave $1,800 for few years ago. That pair was not as detailed (for example: fewer scales on the snakes), was not Maker marked, and did not have any spur straps. See lot #329 in the Lebel's Cody Old West sale June 26, 2008 for a similar pair that sold for $1,932; not gold washed with plain leather straps. These flashy, fancy, 2 patterned 12 Rattlesnake spurs would fit into any fine spur collection, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charrita, Mexican, Old West, Western, Wild West, South of the Border, Folk art, or Western Americana display.
