1933 Wagenfeld JENAer Jena Glass Egg Coddler* No.1 Small Bauhaus
1933 Wagenfeld JENAer Jena Glass Egg Coddler* No.1 Small Bauhaus
Designed with Perfect Functionality:This is aWagenfeld designed JENAer Glass Egg Coddler, made from Borosilicate Glass. Wilhelm Wagenfeld's design for the "No.1 egg coddler" dates from the 1934. Material for its production back then and now serves as the famous Jenaer glass which is heat resistant and unbreakable in high temperature. Eggs can be prepared and cook directly in coddler. Whether to coddle egg inside the dish (without shell), in a pan of simmering water or without water in the oven.
One can see through the top or side of the glass dish, no more guessing and worry if the egg is over-cook or under-cook. It provides excellent egg dishes.
After cooking, the dish is used as a serving vessel directly on the dinning table. Looks modern and elegant.
Each egg coddler comes with a glass lid which is moulded with concentric rib band on top.
The so-called 'tension band'clips the lid in place, using physics pull and push tension to keep the egg moist inside while cooking. The result is phenomenon. The band also makes lifting hot dishes out effortlessly as a carrying handle. Brilliantly engineered. Ingredients such as butter, cream, herbs, herbs etc. can be added to create not only breakfast, but also marvellous luncheon or even as first course of a dinner party. Without the lid, it can be used as a mini soufflé mould in the oven.Mini portion is all in the rage at present and making a comeback after the 1980's much sensationalized 'Novelle measures 6.5 cm in diameter and 8.2 cm in height to the top of the band. Weigh 160 grams each.It design to hold one large egg for cooking. Made with a thicker glass like Pyrex, thus durable. But it still has a delicate quality to it, just like all of Jenaer glass pieces. Made in Germany. Space Shuttle: Those little 'feet' lift the egg dish like a space shuttle. However, they are not decorative, it is to allow the dish can be used in a pan of simmering water, so that the heat can circulate through, without having the boiling water pushing up the dish. The metal band is etched with 'Wilhelm Wagenfeld 1934' on one side as well as 'Jenaer glas' on the other. The reason for that is for Jenaer glaswerk to celebrate the 110 birthday of Wagenfeld in 2010.What could be more appropriate than re-launching his famous egg coddler. Come new and boxed with story, instruction and recipe.
All modernist affectionado simply cannot do without one. A highly functional pieceas well as being very first acquired our first JENAer GLAS egg coddler back in year 2000 and still a favourite kitchen gadget of Labour and Love. How long will this product continue to available we cannot tell, though the factory is making this specially for the 110 birthday of Wagenfeld celebration in 2010. How to use an egg coddler? Warning: Egg coddlers should not be used in the microwave with the lid or metal handle. Anyhow, cooking eggs in microwave often ends in disaster. In a large sauce pan, bring water to boil. Butter or oil the inside of the Egg Coddler. Using room temperature eggs, break 1 egg into the No.1 egg coddler, season to taste with pepper and salt. Other ingredients can be added to the egg coddler. Such as grated cheese, chopped herbs, chopped ham. (We love adding spring onion!) Adding a little cream can make the dish more scrumptious. Clamp on the lid. Stand the egg coddler in a pan of gently simmering water making sure that the water level only reaches halfway up the body of the coddler. It should never be totally submerged in boiling water. It also can be done in the oven without water. It will take a little longer, though one can walk away. Great point on Jenaer Glass is that one can watch till the desire degree without really need to count the minutes. After experiment a few times, one should be able tell how long to cook ones perfect egg. Remove the egg coddler by its handle carefully using a cloth. Serve at the table. When handle is cool enough to touch, remove and enjoy.Note on Borosilicate Glass: Borosilicate glass is well-known for it's heat resistant (450 C) quality and it's non-porous advantage. Container does not tint with food odour or colour, and therefore extremely hygienic. As the glass can withstand sudden change of temperature, it goes straight from freezer/ fridge to oven (without pre-heating). Dishwasher safe. It is commonly known as laboratory glass.Story of JENAer Glas: 'Jenaer Glaswerks' is a long established laboratory glass type manufacturer in Germany, as early as the twenties, bottling glasses, baby milk bottles, cooking and baking dishes from Jena were to be found in households. During this period, the Jenaer Glaswerk developed into an internationally renowned manufacturer of this special glass. In the thirties, The combination of glass production with the famous design concepts of the Bauhaus was the start of modern industrial design at the Jenaer Glaswerk. The Bauhaus in Weimar was only 20 km away from Jena and its designers were fascinated by the idea of using laboratory glass in the kitchen. One of the modernist designer that led the way of the Bauhaus Movement was Wilhelm Wagenfeld. He had design items such as teapot and egg coddlers for Jenaer glass which up to this day are still being produced and admired. Jenaer Glass more costly in terms of production line. Thus they are proportional more expensive than other oven glassware such as Pyrex. Some science fact: Jenaer glass was first produced by the German glass chemist Friedrich Otto Schott, whom with Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss, founded a glass-works in Jenaer, Germany in 1884. The early Jenaer glass: a sodium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc borosilicate containing some boron trioxide in place of part of the silica of older glasses, foreshadowed later borosilicate, which includes Pyrex.
