Morton Pottery - Henry Styles Bridges - 2\" Gray Elephant
Morton Pottery was located in Morton, Illinois, halfway between Peoria and Bloomington, IL. We drive there every summer on our way to Bloomington to visit family and, of course, I look in every antique mall for these little elephants. The Rapp family, owners of Morton Pottery, were traditionally Republicans but they did produce some political items for Democrats. Miniature beer steins were made for the 1932 campaign of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The pottery stood to make substantial financial gains if FDR\'s promise to repeal prohibition should come about.
In 1960, the pottery made giveaway donkeys for John F. Kennedy. During World War II, S.W. Rapp\'s son served in the same air force squadron that Kennedy\'s brother, Jo, Jr., was in. Both of them died serving their country.
These little GOP elephant giveaways always had the candidate\'s name embossed on one side and GOP on the opposite side. The democratic donkeys had VICTORY on the back side. Thousands were made so it is difficult to understand why they are so elusive!
