Murdoch Mackenzie originally charted the Orkney Islands in the 1740s, and such was their success, the Admiralty commissioned him to chart the West Coast of Scotland. The Royal Navy did not have any charts of this coast at the time of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. He spent the next two decades surveying doing so, and in 1776 he published “ A Maritim Survey of Ireland and the West of Great Britain “ in two volumes.
This map is labelled as CHART XVIII page 30, of Vol 2
Scale of six English miles.
There is one Compass Rose with a magnetic Meridian Variation 27 Dec W. 1757.
The depth soundings have a letter under the figure indicating the seabed condition at that point.
