Opie P. Read(1852-1939) author, newspaperman, lecturer. In searches I have discovered that there is different information regarding Read's middle name. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas states "Pope" while other literary sites state the name "Percival." Read's family had owned slaves, and might be described as an enlightened paternalist who had no use for the age's rising racism. In some of his stories, African-Americans had their own voices. Situated in pre-Civil War Kentucky, My Young Master has a slave narrator. Dan, a very young slave is given to the plantation owner's son. The two boys study and grow up together. The other slaves resent Dan's favored position and strive to cause his downfall.
Condition: Very Good. Slight fade spots on front cover. Spine darkened from exposure. Tightly bound. One owner family since original purchase.
