The History behind the Plane
At the beginning of World War II, the best fighter plane in the USAAF was the P-40 Warhawk. The P-40 had some success in China and North Africa, but the Luftwaffe’s Messerschmitt was far too fast for the Warhawk. North American Aviation offered to design and build a replacement and said they could do it in 120 days. Most people laughed at the idea. Four months later, North American had the first P-51 in the air. The U.S. Army Air Force bought a couple for testing. The British ordered 200. Originally built with an Allison engine, the P-51 was faster than the P-40, but still not quick enough for the Bf-109.
Since the British were buying the plane in large numbers, they decided to pair the Mustang with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine that powered the Spitfire. The definitive version, the P-51D, was powered by the V-1650-7, a two-stage two-speed supercharged 12-cylinder Packard-built version of the Merlin engine, and was armed with six .50 caliber (12.7 mm) Browning M2/AN machine guns, a version of the Browning adapted for use in combat aircraft.
Its effect on the Luftwaffe was immediate. Adolf Galland, head of the German fighter Air Force, remarked, “The day the Mustangs went looking for Messerschmitts and Focke Wulfs, was the day we lost the air war.”
The P-51 flew most of its wartime missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from early 1944. It also saw limited service against the Japanese in the Pacific War.
It was used by several other countries until the 1980’s, and remains today one of the most coveted propeller planes ever
