From the 1896 Presidential election and Gubernatorial campaign in New York State featuring the slogan "Democrats Be Loyal."Because of the Free Silver Platform endorsed by the Democratic National Convention, the New York delegation voted against the platform and refused to participate in the selection of candidates for President and Vice-President. Although the people of New York State were in favor of maintaining the gold standard and the nomination of Bryan had greatly disturbed the Democratic Party, the Democratic State convention of 1896, held in Buffalo, was in the hands of the silver men. After considerable casting about, the convention nominated Wilber F. Porter of Watertown for Governor and Frederick C. Schraub for Lieutenant-Governor. Not surprisingly, the ticket lost badly, with McKinley carrying New York by 268,469 votes and Republican Frank S. Black of Troy defeating Porter in the gubernatorial contest by 212,992 votes, the largest plurality in a New York gubernatorial election up to that time.
