NICE PAIR OF GEORGIAN CRESTED STERLING SILVER MASTER SALTS BY HENRY CHAWNER, LONDON, 1790.
I am quite pleased to offer this fine pair of Georgian sterling silver master salts made by Henry Chawner at his London workshop in 1790. Both of the salts are beautifully crested with a lion’s head on one side. Each salt retains their original gold wash interiors.
This fine pair of salts is fully hallmarked as shown in the photos. Hallmarks are located on the inside bottom of each salt’s base and very legible. The hallmarks consist of: lion’s head for London, date letter “p” for 1790, maker’s mark for Henry Chawner, Georgian duty mark and the lion passant for sterling.
The width of each salt from handle to handle is approximately 5.5 inches. The salts stand approximately 3.0 inches high to their highest point (the handles). Each salt’s bowl stands approximately 2.0 inches in hight. Their bowl width is approximately 2.25 inches at their widest point and their length is approximately 4.0 inches. The total weight of both salts is approximately 189 grams.
Condition: The two salts have the normal light surface scratches and minor dings which are expected for silver this age. There are no splits, cracks, pinholes, etc. There is no evidence of repairs or crest removal. There is what appears to be seams only noticeable when examining the inside of the bowls very closely where the handles attach to the bowls at the top portion of each salt. They are not visible from the outside of each bowl. Since they exist on both salts at each handle insertion, I feel they are a manufacturing joint/seam. Furthermore, there is no disruption or loss of the original gold wash in these areas. There is no evidence of them being repaired and they are very stable. Please study the photos carefully since I feel they represent the two pieces accurately.
Please feel free to contact me if you should have any questions or require additional photos. I make great effort to accurately describe each item listed. Returns are accepted, if either condition, country of origin or dating is significantly incorrect. Please study the photos which show the hallmarks as described.
Return Policy: Remember, the item is an antique. Hence, it will have an expected amount of wear from normal use. I described the condition honestly and as well as I can in detail. Again, if you have questions or would like more photos, ask before offerding. As such, returning an item because I failed to mention the tiniest bit of wear, or barely discernible flaw is not acceptable. Nor do I accept returns based on buyer's remorse. Nor change of taste, or because a buyer did not realize how “big” or "small" the stated dimension really is.
