This is a rare 1/6 plate ambrotype photograph of a mother with her post mortem baby lying in her lap. It has been carefully hand tinted. This is an unusual pose, and it has great color and detail!
The photo is housed in a beautiful, heavy case (made of ebony?) with a carved relief of a mother holding a baby. The case measures approximately 3-1/2" x 4" x 1" (closed) and is in very good condition, but does show some light surface marks and the closure is not functioning properly. There are some light scratches on the glass inside.
