Nov 15 1945 #17 Der Ruf German Prisoners Of War Newspaper American Propoganda For Sale
Up for offer is an originalGerman Prisoners of War newspaper "Der Ruf "dated November 15, 1945 volume #17. It has 46 pages and is in nice shape.
The Special Projects Division began a formal reeducation program for German prisoners in fall 1943. Directed by a group of university professors, the program published der Ruf, a prison newspaper edited and prepared by sympathetic German POWs, and distributed books banned in Nazi Germany. The effort was kept secret because it probably violated the Geneva Convention's ban on exposing prisoners to propaganda, the possibility of German retaliation with American prisoners, and the expectation that prisoners would reject overt reeducation. The American professors were almost entirely ignorant of German language or culture, as well as military and prison life. The reading material they prepared was overly intellectual and did not appeal to most prisoners, and der Ruf was essentially a literary journal with little current news and little entertainment. It was still a part of WWII history and to this day is pretty interesting to read from the point of prisoners.
