She was designed by Stanley J. Taylor though the original design and concept was done by Alison Faulds of My Fair Lady, and was issued for one year in 1989 as part of a special limited edition of 5,000 and was produced as part of the Mystical Characters Collection. The jug was produced by Royal Doulton for Kevin Francis Ceramics. Standing at 7.25 inches tall and weighing 1 lb. 11.7 oz; this is the large-sized jug. The jug pays tribute to the most notorious witch trial in England. Legend has it that twelve people who lived in the Pendle, England area during the 17th century were tried with the murder of 10 people by use of witchcraft. As with most of the witch trials that occurred in the Old World there is no way of knowing whether the accused were actually witches or just victims who got caught up in the hysteria of the times. Of the twelve accused one was acquitted, eleven were found guilty and hung and one died in prison before being tried. This Pendle Witch is depicted with scraggly long gray hair and a weathered and aged face with a large pointy and sinister looking nose. She has captivating green eyes, a large wart on her chin and her nose, and her mouth is drawn up into a frown with many wrinkle lines surrounding it. She is wearing a navy blue t-shirt with a light blue collar and overalls. The handle is composed of a yellow hound. This piece is in excellent condition without cracks, chips or crazing. Most of the first jugs created by Royal Doulton were in the traditional
toby jug style. It was the 1930's when Doulton designer Charles Noke
conceived of focusing more on the face of a character that Royal Doulton
coined the name "Characterjug" as a way to differentiate their jugs
from the traditional style of toby jug. At the urging of designer Max
Henk in the 1950's, the handles began to play an important part of
theaestheticsof the jug. It was then plain handles started to be
replaced with decorative handles which portrayed something relevant to
the character depicted.Royal Doulton character jugs come in a variety of sizes with the most common being miniature, small and large. There have been some tiny and mid-sized produced as well, though they are not as common. It was again fameddesigner Charles Noke that used his character jugs idea as inspiration to create additional functional items like: tobacco jars, match stands, ash bowls, teapots, sugar bowls, lighters, napkin rings, wall vases and music boxes. Though produced in smaller numbers then their character jug counterparts, derivatives of character jugs are also extremely popular collectible items. A brief history of the Toby and Royal Doulton Character Mugs' origins......
The
first Toby jugs were created in the 1700's. The first one known was in
the form of a man sitting down wearing the traditional clothing of the
time period (a tricorn hat, stock around his neck, breeches and buckled
shoes.) The figure was normally created with a tankard, or large
drinking glass made of pewter or silver with a single handle and lid.
After this original figure there were creations of other stereotypical
figures like a convict, miner, and a drunk parson or preacher.
The
people given credit for creating the first Tobys as we know them were a
father and son team from Staffordshire in England, though they were a
far cry from the very vibrant and vividly colored ones we see today.
Doulton
began making Toby jugs in the traditional manner dating back to 1815
but it wasn't until the 1920's when they added color. This inspired one
of the Doulton artists named Charles Noke, to think about the Toby
design in a different way. His vision had the jugs being more vibrant
and stylish and included using only the head and shoulders of the
character instead of the whole body. As inspiration for characters he
used English literature, history, and legend. It was 1934 before the
first of these character jugs was put into production. The first Doulton
character was John Barleycorn.
Due to the success of John
Barleycorn other mugs were soon to follow like: Old Charley, The Night
Watchman, Sairey Gamp, Parson Brown and Dick Turpin. It was two years
before a mug was created based on a real person. The first real person
who had a mug created in their likeness was by Doulton artist Herry
Fenton of John Peel, a famed huntsman who was immortalized in the song
"Do Ye Ken John Peel"
The most common feature of Royal Doulton
character jugs is their handles. The first jugs created by Doulton had
plain handles. Through the years they became much more decorative. For
example Dick Turpin, famed highway man had a gun for a handle, the
jailor had a keys for his handle. It was in the 1950's when Max Henk
became involved in their production that they gained even more creative
and significant importance. style="text-decoration:none"
