Nanking Chinese Shipwreck Recovered Cargo Rare Enamel ‘Spittoon’ c1750The body of this rare enamelled spittoon is painted with peony tree issuingfrom rockwork. The interior rim depicts panels of riverscape scenes, one of afoliate design and the other of a seated boy looking out across the river. There were only 26 of these in the entire Cargo and the majority I believe were damaged. There are faint traces of pattern that still remain in ghost form and this isbecause during the manufacture parts of the enamelling were applied on top of theglaze thus having no protection from under sea erosion.
The Nanking Cargo Shipwreck c1750The Nanking cargo is the most famous of theshipwreck cargoes. It attracted worldwide media attention when it was saleedby Christies Amsterdam in April 1986.The ships name was \'The Geldermalsen\' belonging to the Dutch East IndiaCompany. The (VerenigdeOostIndische Compagnie (V.O.C). She set sail from Cantonon December 18th 1755 bound for Amsterdam. The valuable cargo consisted of over160,000 pieces of porcelain, tea, raw silk, textiles and one hundred and fortyfive gold ingots. On January 3rd 1752 after 16 days sailing the Geldermalsen hit a reef and sankin the South China Sea. The cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and his team in 1985-86,shipped to Amsterdam and sold two hundred and thirty four years late! I spent four days viewing the porcelain in order to select the nicer pieces. The sale which made £10,000,000 was one of the most fascinating I have everbeen to, attracting very many buyers from all over the world both in room andon the telephone, everyone wanted a piece of the Nanking Cargo!
