The artist/Flemish geographer is Abraham Ortelius, the map is an engraving from the 1602 Spanish series: Theatro D'el Orbe La Tierra ('Theatrum Orbis Terrarum [Atlas of the Whole World]'). Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum was first published in 1570 and was the "first modern Atlas", it consisted of 70 maps on 53 sheets. Since then the orginal Latin version has been translated into Dutch, German, French, Spanish, and English. By 1624 there were 40 editions and the Theatrum had expanded to 166 maps. Originals of Ortelius's maps are popular collector's items and often sell for tens of thousands of dollars.

Nautical scenes include a sailing ship and a sea monster. In this map, Ortelius gives a number of details found on no other printed map of the period.
