Here's the truth about high sterling silver prices and, if you're a collector, you're not going to like it. Big bracelets like this (and even a lot smaller) and other heavy piecesthis aren't being made for the consumer retail trade any more. You can special order, and that's expensive. You can buy a famous artist piece and will pay a lot more than you'd anticipated. Most independent Navajo silversmiths and even some Zunis simply have stopped making jewelry. Gallup jewelry supplycompaniesreport the Navajos are buying nickel silver not sterling silver so there's undoubtedly a lot of pieces being sold without sterling stamps or worse something stamped sterling that's actually nickel silver also known as German or coin silver.
If I had to rely on an seller for most if not all of my Native American jewelry, I'd buy a silver testing kit.Several months agoa lot of product masquerading as sterling silver that isn't sterling silver started showing up in New Mexico and Arizona for re sale. Just be advised that testing leaves a mark that has to be buffed iff so test in an inconspicuous area.
Finally high sterling silver costs have increased the number of imports -- especially Mexican silver jewelry -- which is, shall we say, sometimes undependable for accurately indicating its true sterling silver content. In one case I'm aware of an Albuquerque wholesaler is buffing off the Mexican artist's hallmark, sterling(925), and Hecho en Mexico stamps from the jewelry and distributing it as Native American. Fortunately so far it doesn't much look like authentic Native American work, but if the knockoff history repeats itself, it soon will.
It's no hype or exaggeration what this gigantic bracelet currently retails for!
After looking for some time and finding very little, I bought the Morenci stones and recently had several bracelets, rings, and earrings custom made and all havepolished silver finishes :-) And they're priced well below their actual retail value. Please take a close look at the color and appearance of these stones -- Morencidoes NOT look like Sleeping Beauty because it doesn't have a heavy black vein matrix nor is Morenci a definitive blue green stone with a golden vein matrix or amonochromatic blue with pale yellow matrix. Morenci is a multihued distinctive blue sometimes with darker blue veins and typically has either silver pyrite matrix(most common), gold pyrite matrix (less common), or areas with golden yellow or reddish gold matrix. You don't have to take my word for it -- check off turquoise mine information sources on the internet and see for yourself!
Classic Morenci turquoise is highly collectible. There never was a mine as such -- the turquoise was often found as loose stones in the rough in the open Morencicopper mining pit in the mountains of southEastern Arizona. Though most of the turquoise left the pit by conventional means, Morenci has been nicknamed"lunchbox" turquoise because a lot did leave in miners' lunchboxes. It's a highly sought after turquoise best known for its superb blue color.
This large and impressive row bracelet features five multihued slightly graduated medium sky blue freeform stones. Theyrange in size from approximately 15/16ths" by 9/16ths" (end stones) to 1 and 3/16ths" by ¾" (center stone). The artist mounted these marvelous Morenci stoneswithin an understated foliate overlay or Navajo nature motif that consists of hand made leaf, raindrop bead, and coiled sun and sunray overlays that spread acrossthe entire width of bracelet between each stone and between the end stones and terminals.
The artist creates these overlays from separate sheets of sterling silver, removes them, and then bonds them to the bracelet's surface and to each othercreating a multi layered, three dimensional design. As final touches, the artist added twisted sterling silver rope overlays along the top and bottom of the stone channelnext to the grooved overlaid edges and hand stamped the terminal border overlay with miniature suns and sunrays.
The Navajo nature motif represents the cycles of nature (rain and sun) that create and sustain life (leaves).
This handsome bracelet is 1 and 15/16ths" wide in the center tapering to a generous 1 and 3/8ths" in width at both terminals. It has an inside measurement of5¾" with a very carefully adjustable opening gap of 1¼." If your wrist is 6¾" to no more than 7¼" in circumference, this should fit with little or no very carefuladjustment of the shanks and/or terminals.
Navajo artist James Toadlena created this bracelet, and his hallmark and sterling stamp are on the back.

Making Smart Buying Choices: I am a proud member of the Indian Arts and Crafts Association (IACA) whose members must pledge to sell authentic Native American art and represent it accurately. Only a very, very, very small Native American jewelry sellers have been accepted for membership. If you care whether the jewelry you buy is authentic Native American, please click on the View Seller's Other Items link in the box at the top of the page at right. A substantial percentage of the jewelry offered as Native American is actually made in China, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, the Middle East, Mexico, and elsewhere and then misrepresented as Navajo or Zuni. Two-thirds of all so-called Native American jewelry sold in this country is fake especially in this venue and on the TV shopping networks! Remember, choose wisely. Save for a while if necessary to buy the best pieces you can possibly afford. Don’t just spend money, invest it in good quality items that have possible future investment potential.
