Near Mint 1898 Edison Suitcase Standard Phonograph W/orig. Brass Horn, Much More For Sale
Make
sure to check out all of my sales after you've looked at this one.
I'm listing an assortment of museum quality musical, electrical and mechanical
antiques, and I suspect that there will be at least something of
interest to almost everyone. Here's a superb 1898 Edison "suitcase" Standard Phonograph with its original 15" all-brass horn, its original shaver, and its original Edison Automatic Recorder, its original Automatic Recorder, its original chip brush, its original dust brush, its original oil can, an early black wax pre-recorded Edison cylinder, a shaved brown wax cylinder on which a fresh recording can be made, and an original set of gutta percha earphones (the rubber tubes have of course been replaced). This is the 1st version of the Standard, with a 2-latch lid.As you can see in the
photographs, the phonograph is in excellent to near mint condition throughout, most notably the enamel on the bedplate and the gold detailing along the bedplate's periphery, both of which are original and very clean, despite the passage of more than 110 years. The Edison signature on the vertical plane of the casting is crisp and clear. The plated parts still gleam, the mandrel is true, and the endgate locks snugly. The reproducer clips are original, as are the tiny screws. The lid hardware retains is very clean, with some minor tarnish consistent with its age. The original rubber buffering shims are still in place along the upper lip of the cabinet (see photos). The cabinet is in excellent condition, and it retains its original finish, which is still beautiful. There are some small, age-related fissures on the left side of the cabinet, but as early "suitcase" Standard cabinets go, this is one of the best that I've ever seen. The mechanism is in excellent condition, both above and below the bedplate. The Automatic reproducer has a good stylus, and it sounds about as good as an Automatic Reproducer can sound given its design limitations. The motor is still robust, and the phonograph can easily make it through a cylinder, even with the carriage pulling the weight of the relatively heavy all-brass horn. The
original 15" brass horn is in exceptionally nice condition, with no
dings, no corrosion, no damage to the nozzle. It mounts snugly on the
reproducer, and it looks fantastic. The crank is original, and its in excellent condition, with plenty of it original black enamel still intact and no chips or other damage to the cast iron shaft. The Automatic Recorder appears to have been rarely used. It is complete and in excellent condition. The earset is likewise in excellent condition. The hardened rubber tubes were replaced with supple new ones, but the reproducer fitting and the gutta percha earpieces are original and in excellent condition. The dust brush and chip brush are in excellent condition, as is the early oil can.Overall, a scarce, early phonograph that's rarely seen in such fine condition. As noted above, I'll include an early black was cylinder record with it so that
you can enjoy the phonograph as soon as it arrives. And if you're brave enough to undertake the messy job of home recording, I'll include a brown wax record that's been shaved down so that you can try that too. If you're not already familiar with
how to operate an early cylinder phonograph, don't worry. I'll provide
you with simple, easy to understand set-up instructions. buyers from overseas should contact me in advance for a shipping quote so that I can confirm my ability to export the phonograph to your country. That's about it. I will carefully prep everything for
shipping and pack everything carefully and properly. I've been shipping
fragile antique phonographs and wireless sets for years, and I know how
to get them to you safely. Buyer prepays and includes shipping. Paypal
