A chance visit to her husband’s office, an abstracted look at the scribbling pad on his desk, these are the accidents which destroy a wife’s hitherto unquestioned confidence in her marriage. The idea that her husband may be unfaithful plunges Helen into a vortex of suspicion which gradually spreads like an acid from the centre of her life outwards, eroding every human contact and biting deep into the past. But its most tragic consequence is the complete breakdown in communication between the three people ‘nearest and dearest’ to each other, while outside the vortex, a once brilliant, now wise old man, seeing the pattern of life (which has caused him to become a hopeless drunk) about to be repeated, tries to intervene. In this strongly constructed novel, the emotions and actions of a small group of people are acutely portrayed and its ironic ending underlines the author’s central theme of individual responsibility.- Measurements - 20.5cm x 13.8cm x 2.1cm- Please make sure to view all the photographs.Condition - Good - Dust jacket with light edge wear, a few stains to the back, a cup ring mark to the front, and a few small rips.
