Pronounced "four, double six, six four", the numbers used for these pieces were Nelson Mandela's prison number while serving his 27 years. They derive from the fact that he was the 466th prisoner in 1964 to arrive on Robben Island. An icon and visionary of the changing political world in the African continent, Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was an anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician, formerly serving as President of South Africa. As a young man, he led protests against apartheid and was imprisoned in 1962 on charges of conspiring to overthrow the white minority government. When he was finally freed in 1990, he led negotiations with white leaders, resulting in the abolishment of apartheid and the establishment of a non-racial system of government. In 1993, Mandela and then South African President F.W. deKlerk won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in integrating South Africa and its government. Shortly after winning his Nobel Peace Prize, Mandela was elected as President of South Africa in 1994, becoming the first black South African to hold the position. He further dismantled the established apartheid government while in office, desegregating institionalized racism and poverty and continually forming interracial peace. He served in office and in other positions (President of the African National Congress; Secretary General of the Non-Alligned Movement) until 1999, when he retired. Despite his retirement, Mandela continued to lead a very public life, continuing to participate in programs and meet with world leaders until his health began to fail in 2004. With his failing health, Mandela retreated from the public eye, living a private life while dealing with health complications. On December 5, 2013, the beloved hero died peacefully in his childhood home in Qunu village in Eastern Cape, South Africa.
