Never was the danger of irresponsible power, both to a monarch and his people, more signally displayed than during the reign of Cambyses, the son and successor of Cyrus. An Eastern court has always been a bad school for princes. Surrounded by sycophants, or under the care of women secluded in harems and the mere playthings of men, there is an absence of control, and especially of that maternal control, the happy effects of which are conspicuous in other parts of the world. Consequently, we find the great men of the East remarkable for violence of appetite and passion, like Xerxes at the Hellespont, wreaking their vengeance on inanimate objects, highly elated by prosperity, and equally abject in adversity. But in addition to this disadvantage, a peculiar calamity had befallen Cambyses. There was a vein of insanity in his character—the same kind of insanity exhibited at a later period by Caligula and by Paul of Russia, The ancients called this madness the sacred disease inflicted as a punishment for peculiar wickedness.—Herodot. hook iii. chap. xxx.—which betrays the unhappy subjects of it into actions as eccentric as they are cruel and tyrannical, and amounts at length to demoniacal possession. A reign, then, auspiciously begun, and in which great things might have been accomplished, terminated quickly in the premature death of Cambyses, after an uninterrupted succession of reverses and excesses. The military ardour of the Persians was now at its height. They were eager for war; and the king, looking round him with a view to some fresh enterprise, resolved, in this instance, it must be confessed, with better judgment than his father, to pounce upon Egypt, a prey richer and less hazardous than the Massage...
