Nice Oval Nantucket Basket Purse W/ Hand-tinted Scrimshaw Of Nantucket Harbor For SaleUp for sale is a beautifully woven oval Nantucket basketry purse. Just like the Nantuckets of old, the basket was woven around a hardwood base with narrow weavers filling in the sides. The basket also has a bentwood swing handle held in place with ivory-colored pegs, and the traditional latching mechanism with a stylus. The center of the basket is really nice, featuring an oval hand-tinted scrimshaw medallion which depicts the harbor of Nantucket with a returning ship. The basket's rim is really nice, sturdy and thick, and is thickly double wrapped with cane weavers, and the hinges are also wrapped with cane. On the inside of the basket is the traditional penny with the date the basket was woven - 1999. The basket is not signed, and is probably a quality reproduction rather than actually having been made on Nantucket Island. But it displays beautifully and could still be used for its original purpose if desired.
This Nantucket purse measures 7½" x 5" across at the rim, and is 5½" deep - about 8¾" to the top of the handle when it is raised. This nice basket is in excellent condition, with no breaks or missing splints. The handle, rim, and base are all in perfect condition, and the latch mechanism and the hinges still work. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's features and condition. This beautifully crafted Nantucket basket will make a very nice addition to someone's collection.
