Nitinol, also known as Ni-Ti is one of several shape memory alloys available. The shape memory effect comes from the mixtrure of nickel and titanium transferring between the martensite and austentite phases of crystal structure. Basically, what this looks like is you have a wire that you can straighten, bend into any shape, mash, etc. and then place it in hot water to watch it come back to its original shape. The uses for this are endless, These make wonderful magic tricks for when you dunk the wire into someone's coffee, the wire turns into the the card that they have in their hand. They're great for birthday parties to see your child's amazement when this simple piece of wire turns into their name when someone 'accidentally' spills coffee on it. Other uses include robotics, heat engines, science projects, practical jokes, artery stents for a bypass surgury, the only limitation is your creativity. More information is available from our company website www.KelloggsResearchLabs.com
What you are buying is a five foot long piece of .010" diameter cold drawn Nitinol wirein retail packaging. Included with the wire, you will recieve instructions for setting the memory shape and making the wire spring back into its memory shape. As you can see, these normally sell in the store for $9.99 but since you're buying direct from the manufacturer, you can get it for only $4.99 + shipping.
