No Reserve Royal Doulton "mephistopheles" D5758 Toby Mug Character Jug W/verse For Sale
UP FOR sale...Small Rare Royal Doulton Character Jug "Mephistopheles" D5758 Royal Doulton of England are world-renowned for their creative and highly collectible lines of character jugs, toby jugs and derivative items. The tradition of the Toby as a drinking vessel dates back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and featured the full figure of a man in a seating or standing position. Most of the first jugs created by Royal Doulton were in the traditional toby jug style. It was the 1930's when Doulton designer Charles Noke conceived of focusing more on the face of a character that Royal Doulton coined the name "Characterjug" as a way to differentiate their jugs from the traditional style of toby jug. At the urging of designer Max Henk in the 1950's, the handles began to play an important part of theaestheticsof the jug. It was then plain handles started to be replaced with decorative handles which portrayed something relevant to the character depicted. This jug on offer is one of the most highly sought after and valued of the Royal Doulton character jugs. It was designed by famed Doulton art director Charles J. Noke. It was the first double sided jug to be created and there was not another double sided jug created after for fifty years. The jug was first issued in 1937 and was only produced for 11 years. The value of this jug is $2,000. This jug has the famed verse on the bottom translated from Francois Rabelais' The Quarter Deliverswhich reads: "When the devil was sick, the devil a saint would be. When the devil got well, the devil a saint was he." The jug itself is rare, finding the jug with the verse is even more rare and jugs containing the verse are worth $500 dollars more than their counterparts without it. Mephistopheles means "not loving the light" in Greek. It features two sides; one with a smiling face and one with a sinister face. Sometimes also called Mephisto, Mephistopheles was the devil character in the popular German legend in which a man named Faust becomes bored with his life and makes a pact with his devil to take his soul in exchange for unfathomable knowledge and divine earthly pleasures. The legend has been re-interpreted and recreated through the ages by famed authors Goethe and Christopher Marlowe. This Mephistopheles is the Royal Doulton interpretation of the character. Done in a color scheme of brown, red and peach, the smiling side features him with high arched eye-brows and a very sharp brown mustache that stands at a 45 degree angle on both sides of his face. He has a deceptive smile upon his lips and you could almost see him using it to seduce his next victim into giving away their soul to him as well.He has a brown beard which is parted in the middle and shaped into two points at the end of his chin; his eyes are cast to the side as if caught in a lie. At the top of the jug you can see the horns which grow from the sides of his forehead. There are numerous lines on his face depicting a man who has witnessed a great many things in his life which have taken a toll on him. The reverse side of the jug features a more depressed and sinister looking Mephistopheles. On this side we see the opposite in facial expressions. His eye brows on this side are straight lines, his previously pointy mustache is grounded into the shape of a goatee. His eyes look lifeless and are at the top of his eyes as if he is looking up at the sky. The wrinkles in his face are still present but have caused his face to look droopy. His horns are still present on this side of the jug. This jug was produced prior to the 1950's when the handles to the jugs began to play a much more active role in the overall aesthetics; therefore this jug has a plain blown handle.Manufacturer: Royal Doulton Product: Character Jug Character: Mephistopheles Design Number:D5758 Modeler: Charles J.
