GROUSE

The Northwest Coast is home to a number of grouse species; however, depictions are rare within Northwest Coast Art. Grouse masks are typically associated with the Kwakwaka\'wakw Dance of the Forest Spirits (Atlakim) and are usually crudely carved. They were commonly burned at the end of the ceremony.

Grouse Masks are typically painted white and painted with feather designs. They are often depicated in a high state of alertness and adonrned with forest materials.
