handmade piece, by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Sammy Dawson, is carved from traditional
red cedar. The mask is masterfully carved; displaying clean cuts, deep
carving and fantastic detail. The mask has been adorned with tradtional
cedar bark rope. A small dragonfly sits on top of the frogs head and it's
wings, which move up and down, are contolled by a pull lever. Sammy has
signed the back of the mask and I will provide a copy of his biography

Birth Date: 1976
At the age of 12, after spending
his early years in Alert bay watching his grandfather Chief William Robertson
and other local carvers create masks along with other traditional regalia,
Sammy began his carving career. He later apprenticed under dsitinguished
Northwest Coast artists Simon Dick and Eddie McDougal.
Sammy creates masks, drums
as well as larger totems and other ceremonial pieces. His works have become
extremely collectable and his creations are represented in many of the
top native art galleries.
Frogs are beings of great importance within
Northwest Coast societies. It is believed that the vocal calls of frogs
contain great power and magic and they are revered for their ability to
transcend worlds: land and water. As a result they are considered to be
extremely knowledgeable and often act as helpers to shamans.
Frog is often portrayed with an extended tongue, touching the tongue of
another creature in an exchange of knowledge. It is also utilized as secondary
decorative image, appearing peeking out of another beings ears, mouth,
Frog is identifiable by large eyes, flat nose, broad toothless mouth,
bent legs, protruding tongue and webbed toes.
