MAN OF THE WOODS
Bak’was, the Wild
Man of the Woods, is a small human-like creature that can be found lurking
in the forest. You may be able to catch a sight of him early in the
morning along the beach-line collecting his favorite food, cockles.
One must be weary of Bak’was, he may try to tempt you to partake
in one of his meals and if you do, you will turn into one of his kind.
Those unfortunate individuals that fall prey to his trickery are condemned
to a life of eternal hunger, misery and wandering.
Deep round eyes, a hooked beak-like nose, hollow cheeks and a grimacing
mouth characterize Bak’was masks. His hair is rather untidy and
may have twigs intertwined within it.
Place of Birth: Alert Bay, British Columbia
Birth Date: 1976
At the age of 12, after spending
his early years in Alert bay watching his grandfather Chief William Robertson
and other local carvers create masks along with other traditional regalia,
Sammy began his carving career. He later apprenticed under dsitinguished
Northwest Coast artists Simon Dick and Eddie McDougal.
Sammy creates masks, drums
as well as larger totems and other ceremonial pieces. His works have become
extremely collectable and his creations are represented in many of the
top native art galleries.
