books
for
many
historians
who
have
written about Ohio history. 'Henry Howe' books are
referred to time-and-time again and have became the standard history of
Ohio!
In 1840 Howe, joined with John Warner Barber to produce a history of
New York state; Howe journeyed from county to county collecting data
for the book and Barber made sketches for illustrations. Histories of
New Jersey and Virginia followed, 1842 and 1845 respectively.
Howe began his history of Ohio in 1846. Starting in Marietta, he walked
and rode around the state interviewing early settlers, collecting data,
and sketching points of interest. He wrote about Ohio history with not
only facts, but included some history of its settlements and incidents
illustrating the customs, the fortitude, the bravery and the privations
of its early settlers. Howe returned to New Haven to arrange the
material and published Historical Collections of Ohio in 1847. In
September, 1885, Howe resolved to again make the tour of Ohio for a new
edition. Since 1846 Ohio had more than doubled in
population. This book is a 1908 reprint of the 1888 update. Along
with the original 1840's town sketches, this Centennial Edition has
updated town sketches [1880's] after Howe revisited many of them.
If you've never read a book by Howe, you're missing a treat. His
knowledge of people is evident in his kind words and the text is
dripping with knowledge. He includes history, facts, anecdotes
and stories that are intriguing, humorous and historical. If you are
from the areas included or not, you're in for an Ohio history treat!

CONDITION: This old complete 2-book set will make the
winner a
solid
reading or research copy if you are more interested in content than
appearance. This will be a chance to pick up this century-old rare set
of books much cheaper than a 'collector' set. Someone tried to repair
the first 2 or 3 pages of both books but probably didn't realize what
tape would do. As you can see in the pics below, the tape has yellowed
and left tape ghosts on the first couple of pages. Vol. II is missing
the frontispiece. Other than that, both text blocks are solid and in
very good condition. The spines have been recovered with black leather
and new endpapers appear in both books, front and rear. New
headbanding now appears at the head and heal of the spines. The leather
board
corners have some chipping with no leather rot. Front and rear board
cloth is in very nice condition. The pages are not brittle and no
odors. This is a solid set.
