OLD NAVAJO RUG Authentic 48 x72 5 COLOR Hand Spun STORM PATTERN Early 1900's
UP FOR sale IS AN
48" X 72"
DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: THIS LARGE AUTHENIC OLD NAVAJO RUG IS 48" X 72" (4X6 FEET) AND HAS 5 DIFFERENT COLORS, MOSTLY IF NOT ALL HAND CARDED AND HAND SPUN WOOL YARN. THE WARP THREADS ALSO APPEAR TO BE HAND SPUN. IT IS IN THE CLASSIC OLD "STORM" PATTERN IN ITS MOST PURE BASIC FORMS. THE "STORM" RADIATES TO THE 4 CORNERS OF THE RUG AND THE LONG JAGGED LINES REPRESENT LIGHTENING.
THIS RUG IS GENERALLY TIGHT AND CONSISTENTLY WOVEN. THE MAJORITY OF WEAVING IS IN GOOD CONDITION BUT WITH WEAR AND THINNING THROUGHOUT. UNFORTUNATELY IT HAS MISSING TASSELS, SELVAGE BREAKS, SEVERAL SMALL HOLES, JUST A FEW SMALL SPOTS OF RED BLEED, AND FINALLY A SHALLOW 8" SECTION OF EDGE DAMAGE THAT GOES IN ABOUT 4 ROWS OF THE WEFT. FORTUNATELY THE DAMAGED SPOTS ARE MOSTLY IN AREAS OF COLORS THAT ARE EASIEST TO DUPLICATE FOR REPAIR. THE WHITE AREAS ARE AN "OFF WHITE" TOWARDS THE LIGHT TAN/PINK SIDE OF WHITE. I FIRST THOUGHT THIS WAS RED BLEED BUT DISCOUNTED THIS BECAUSE OF ITS EVENESS THROUGHTOUT THE PIECE AND THE STILL SHARP OUTLINES WITH VIRTUALLY NO SIGN OF BLEED WHERE IT BORDERS THE RED. THERE IS ALMOST NO BLEED AT ANY OF THE BORDERS WHERE THE "LIGHTENING " POINTS" ADJOIN THE LIGHTER FIELD. MOST RED BLEED DISCOLORATION I HAVE SEEN RADIATES FROM THE RED INTO THE WHITE FOR A COUPLE OF INCHES BEFORE FADING OUT AND THERE IS ALMOST NONE OF THAT IN THIS RUG. I'M SURE THERE COULD BE OTHER EXPLANATIONS FOR THIS, BUT OVERALL IT DOESN'T SEEM TO DETRACT FROM THE BEAUTY OF THIS RUG.
THERE ARE NO UNNATURAL ODORS OR SIGNIFICANT STAINS, IT COULD USE A GOOD CLEANING IF YOU WANTED TO BRIGHTEN IT UP.
THIS RUG IS AN EXCELLENT CANDIDATE FOR RESTORATION. IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT WESTERN DECOR PIECE, WALL HANGING OR DECORATIVE PIECE FOR THE LODGE OR CABIN.
THERE ARE MANY GENERAL WEAVING CHARACTERISTICS THAT IDENTIFY A RUG AS GENUINE NAVAJO AND IT PAYS TO LOOK FOR THEM WHEN SHOPPING, EXPECIALLY ON LINE. HER'S A FEW TO LOOK FOR:
THERE IS A SINGLE WARP STRING AT THE EDGES OF THE PIECE AND THE 4 SELVAGE ENDS ARE TIED AT THE CORNERS TO FORM A TASSEL
THE WARP YARN IS LAID ON THE LOOM IN A CONTINUOUS LOOP GOING ROUND AND ROUND FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, LEAVING NO ENDS STICKING OUT OF THE TOP AND BOTTOM (EXCEPTIONS TO THIS ARE SOME VERY EARLY RARE RUGS "GALLUP THROWS", AND "RAMAH" RUGS WHICH HAVE DANGLING WARP STRINGS AT 1 END)
THE BEGINNING, END, AND SIDE FINISHING OF THE WARP IS UNIQUE WITH A TASSLE AT EACH CORNER.
"LAZY" LINES ARE OFTEN PRESENT ON LARGER WEAVINGS AS THE WEAVER MOVES BACK AND FORTH IN FRONT OF THE PIECE.
SUBTLE VARIATIONS IN YARN COLOR AND TEXTURE FROM ONE AREA OF THE RUG TO ANOTHER THAT ARE ONLY PRESENT IS A NATIVE HAND CRAFTED PIECE.
OTHER DETAILS: THE MARKET FOR NAVAJO WEAVING AND CRAFTS IN THE 20TH CENTURY WAS VARIED. IT INCLUDED TOURISTS WHO VISITED THE SOUTHWEST BY SANTE FE RAILROAD TRAINS AND WHO VISITED THE FRED HARVEY GIFT SHOPS AT EACH STATION ALONG THE WAY, SUCH AS GALLUP AND SANTE FE. OTHER SEGMENTS OF THE MARKET WERE THE LARGE CITIES (ALBUQUERQUE, PHOENIX, ETC.) AND THE RESERVATION TRADING POSTS WHERE THE MORE ADVENTUROUS TOURISTS VISITED (SUCH AS THE HUBBELL TRADING POST AT GANADO, ARIZONA) TRADERS ENCOURAGED NAVAJO WEAVERS TO "WEAVE FOR THE MARKET ". UNDER THIS PHILOSOPHY, WEAVERS WERE GIVEN PAGES OUT OF PERSIAN RUG BOOKS AND ENCOURAGED TO ADAPT TRADITIONAL NAVAJO PATTERNS WITH THESE EXOTIC ORIENTAL GEOMETRIC DESIGNS. THAT IS WHY RUGS WITH THE HISTORIC "PRE-PERSIAN" ERA SYMBOLS AND PATTERNS, SUCH AS THIS ONE, TRULY REPRESENT THE EARLY NAVAJO WEAVING TRADITION.
