Pine needle basketry - which is one of the oldest known forms of basketry - dates back over 9000 years. This is well before the making of pottery vessels began. Historical references do not indicate when pine needles were first used for basket making, but because of the plentiful availability of the 7-18 inch Longleaf Pine Needles in their area, Seminoles in South Florida are noted to be the first pine needle basket makers. The Seminole Indians used a shell needle to sew bundles of pine needles together with fern roots, sisal or swamp grass.

In SouthEastern United States, the historic art of Pine Needle Basketry is a very old tradition handed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, this art form has almost become extinct.

There are two primary stitches the Seminoles used in their baskets. The two-pointed “wheat stitch” and the three-pointed “fern stitch”. These were consistent throughout the tribe. Unique designs and variations distinguished individual basket makers. A certain basket could be identified as to who made it by the form of the basket.
