Breast star iseight-pointed silver faceted chiselled star with graduated rays. The face with a centrally-imposed silver-gilt-edged white enamel Cross with graduated silver-gilt rays between the arms. Circular silver-gilt medallion with a beaded border imposed with a central blue enamel medallion bearing an applied silver-gilt head and shoulders full-face portrait of Pope Saint Sylvester wearing the Papal crown within a gilt ring on a stippled ground inscribed ‘SANC. SILVESTER P. M.’.A five-pointed star at the base; the reverse plain with maker’s cartouche ‘Tanfani Bertarelli’ and with pin for wear. Large silver-gilt-edged white enamel Maltese cross with silver-gilt rays between the arms and with eyelet and silver-gilt loop for suspension. Circular silver-gilt medallion with a beaded border, a central blue enamel medallion bearing an applied silver-gilt he portrait of Pope Saint Sylvester wearing the Papal crown within a gilt ring on a stippled ground inscribed ‘SANC. SILVESTER P. M.’.A five-pointed star at the base; the reverse with a circular central silver-gilt medallion with a beaded border bearing the Papal arms centrally within a blue-green enamel ring with the gilt inscription ‘MDCCCXLI’ (1841) and ‘MCMV’ (1905). The Order of Saint Sylvester was instituted by Pope Gregory XVI on 31 October 1841 and reformed, along with all other Papal orders, in 1905. It is awarded to laymen and women who are active in the life of the Church.
