Original 1860's White Leather Lemon Peel Baseball In Outstanding Condition:
Exceptionally Rare and important, ca1860's, professionally manufactured White Leather Lemon Peel type Baseball in outstanding, original condition!!! This simply amazing and beautiful, early Lemon Peel Baseball measures approx 9 3/4" in circumference and weighs approx. 5.5 ounces. The Ball is made of a white leather with expertly executed and well balanced hand stitching. There is a small, period manuscript ink inscription near the point where the 4 rows of stitches meet that appears to read “$.40 - surely the original price of the baseball!!!
We are not experts in the field of 19th century Baseball equipment but extensive research leads us to believe that this was a commercially made and not a "home made" Baseball - likely made for use by an organized team of skilled players. We have been selling high quality antiques for over 33 years and there is no question and absolutely no doubt that this leather Baseball is from the mid 19th century. It is 100%, unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period 1860’s (or perhaps early 1870’s). This guarantee is both lifetime and unconditional and we also guarantee that the Ball will be determined authentic by any third party authentication service.
We have viewed a large number of Lemon Peel Baseballs that have been sold over the past 10 years including those sold by the top Sports sale Houses in the country, and we were unable to find an example of a high quality Lemon Peel Ball in anywhere near the outstanding condition of the example offered here. We have included numerous images of the ball below and they give a good indication of the beauty and condition of this wonderful, mid 19th century Baseball. It actually appears that this Ball saw very little use on the Diamond - it retains a significantly “white color and, although showing age appropriate surface patina and light soiling, it is in amazingly well preserved condition. The unquestionably period, brown gall ink inscription also attests to the age and state of preservation of this wonderful Lemon Peel Ball.
This is NOT one a small "golfball" size examples but is a full size, 9 3/4" circumference Baseball that feels amazingly similar to a modern Baseball when held "in hand". Our best guess is that this Ball saw very little if any use. The leather cover does have some surface blemishes and some light soiling but no significant scuffing, surface wear, surface loss, damage or repairs of any kind. The stitching is 100% original and as tight and strong as the day the Ball was manufactured. The Ball is sound and solid and (as mentioned above) has an amazingly similar feel to that of a modern Baseball.
Please Note: Again we wish to state that the Baseball offered here is unconditionally guaranteed authentic and original - a ca1860's Lemon Peel Ball manufactured for use in the mid-19th century. It is backed by our “no questions asked return policy and lifetime guarantee of authenticity. This baseball is unconditionally guaranteed to be deemed authentic by any third party authentication service and the Ball will be accompanied by our own Letter of Authenticity with a statement of our unconditional return policy and lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
This exceptionally rare and beautiful, ca1860's, professionally manufactured 9 3/4" circumference White Leather Lemon Peel type Baseball is sold here, as always, without reserve and with the confidence that it will attract the serious attention that it justly deserves!!!
