Original 1894 Set Of Paper Dolls By Raphael Tuck Titled "courtly Beatrice":
Very rare and wonderful, original 1894, Set of Children's Paper Dolls titled “Courtly Beatrice" and manufactured by Raphael Tuck & Sons. This fantastic set of Paper Doll’s includes a die cut Paper Doll figure printed on a light card stock and wearing a laced front slip. The Paper Doll Figure measures approx. 9” tall. The Set includes 4 dresses and two hats (likely one hat is missing since Whitton pictures three) and comes with the original embossed and illustrated card stock box / portfolio.
This set of Paper Dolls is from Tuck's "Prince and Princess" Series of Dressing Dolls and can be found illustrated and described on page 44 of Blair Whitton's "Collector's Guide to Raphael Tuck & Sons: Paper Dolls, Paper Toys & Children's Books". The Doll figure and all four of the dresses carrie the mark of the manufacture - Raphael Tuck & Sons - on the reverse.
This very rare, original 19th century Courtly Beatrice Paper Doll set is in good to very good condition. The Paper Doll figure and outfits are all die cut (rather than hand cut) as issued. All pieces are clean - the chromolithograph colors are bright and beautiful. The Doll figure lacks the original, folding easel type stand that was original attached at the back and has light creases at both of her feet. One of the four dresses has edge creases and another has a crease near the bottom edge. Two of the dresses lack the small, applied tabs at the top (easily replaced and not actually necessary to attach the dress to the Paper Doll). As stated above, we believe the Set lacks only a single hat and is otherwise complete. The original box is complete and intact but soiled and edge worn as can be seen in the scans below.
A rare and wonderful, original, 1894, Set of Children's Paper Dolls titled “Courtly Beatrice" and manufactured by Raphael Tuck & Sons and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
