Original 19th Century Death Mask Of Ludwig Van Beethoven Composer Pianist For SaleExceptionally rare and important, original, mid 19th century, plaster Death Mask of Ludwig Van Beethoven. This outstanding Death Mask measures approx 9 1/2" tall and 6" across at its widest point. The mold for Beethoven's death mask was made 2 days after he had died by Josef Danhauser. The following Beethoven's funeral took place and he was buried. It depicts the Master with sunken cheeks and a peaceful countenance and details the vast changes that Beethoven's final illness had inflicted on his countenance.
A modern pencil inscription on the back of the Mask reads "Ulysses S. Grant / Mt McGregor / July 24, 1895" but there is absolutely NO DOUBT that this is not the Death Mask of President Grant but is, in fact, the Death Mask of Ludwig Van Beethoven. We have included a photograph below of the example of Beethoven's Death Mask that is held at Princeton University for comparison.
We are unsure if the Death Mask offered here was made at the time of Beethoven's death in 1827 or if it is a later casting from the original mold but we do unconditionally guarantee that it is an original, 19th century example and NOT a reproduction, recast or of modern manufacture.
This very rare and important, 19th century Death Mask of Ludwig Van Beethoven is in good to very good condition with some scattered flaking to the original, applied surface and with an area of damage and loss in the area of the subject's left ear (see the scans below).
An exceptionally rare and important, 19th century plaster Death Mask of the great German composer and pianist Ludwig Van Beethoven and an important addition to any collection!!!
