CIVIL WAR U S STAMPED WAIST BELT PLATE

Note I have referenced two books in the ad, American Military and Naval Belts 1812-1902 by R. Stephen Dorsey and Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874 by Sydney C. Kerksis. Neither books are in sale reference only. I have taken photos indoors and out to highlight the item.

In Sydney C. Kerksis book Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874 the follow is noted on page 37 regarding the design I believe of this buckles offered for sale. Figure 31 United States Government type Waist belt plate – Period 1839 to 1874, die stamped with weight about 4 ½ ounces. Made of brass and solder, with dimensions of about 2.14 X 3.40 inches or 55 X 86 millimeters. The buckle offered is of the same design, with arrowhead type studs, dimension’s approximately the same. Weight is 4.75 ounces rather than an approximate 4.50 ounces. Both are made from stamped brass and solder.

On the remarks section the following is noted:

This somewhat flimsy and light weight plate appears to be a transition between the older plates, with a two piece hook and stud assembly and with round or oval studs, and the later war time plates with a with a one piece stamped assembly with arrowhead studs (as is this US belt buckle offered for sale). Although it has arrowhead studs, somewhat badly placed, it is quite obviously of two piece construction as the three rivets joining the hook and stud assembly can be plainly seen. Most plates of this type seem to have been in use by the Federal 20th Corps (formerly the 12th Corps) and have been recovered in both Virginia and Georgia.

The Buckle appears to be correct for a Civil War period piece. This wonderful Civil War Belt Buckle is as found, it appears to never have been cleaned or worked on. Wonderful old age patina as photos show. Some dings are present on edges and in the brass plate as photos show. will accept PAYPAL. Items will be shipped Priority Mail mail usually next day after payment of Paypal, packaging and mail $ 5.35.
