Original French Cavalry Cuirass Armor And Helmet, C.1830s-1840s For Sale
FRENCH CAVALRY (CUIRASSIER) CUIRASS AND HELMET, C. 1830s-1840s. Overall: Sale includes original cuirass, helmet with plume, and epaulettes. Cuirass: Late 1820's model cuirass. This cuirass is in excellent condition with no dents--there is a very small minor rust stain patch on the lower backplate. The original cuirass leather shoulder straps and brass rings and tabs are present. The leather straps have never been removed or torn from the backplate mounting. There are two later added reinforcing leather tabs on the underside of the leather shoulder straps to prevent tearing of the original leather--these reinforcements are not visible with the cuirass on display. The waist belt is an old replacement--the original, like on many of these cuirass, long disintegrated. The original inner liner hooks and brass studs are present on the cuirass. The cuirass breastplate is marked Manufre Rle de Klingenthal Juin 1830, 1T2L No. 8414 and the backplate has similar Klingenthal markings dated Juillet 1834, 2T2L No. 1021. Helmet: Model 1840/52--is contemporary with the cuirass. While this helmet has an aged appearance, it may be not be original--none of the expected markings are present. Therefore, the helmet is being sold as a replica. The skull is heavy steel with a black horse fur turban with a leather tie on the back. The brass comb or cimier is nicely decorated on both sides with volutes and laurel leaves, and the front bears the head of Medusa above a flaming grenade. At the top front of the cimier is a removable red horsehair brush in a brass "onion" holder. A healthy-condition black horsehair tail hangs from the rear of the cimier. The cimier has no dents or deformations. In a decorated brass socket on the left side of the helmet is a red feather plume (modern replacement). The chinchains/bosses and leather backing are in excellent condition. The red wool epaulettes are from the late 19th/early 20t century. Invoice and shipping: An invoice with shipping and insurance costs will be sent to the winning buyer--do not make payment prior to receiving the invoice. The cuirass and helmet are heavy and correct postage will need to be determined by the post office. The display mannequin and modern flannel jacket w/red collar and not included in this sale.
