This is an ORIGINAL \"Winter Field Cap\", which was standardized sometime either priorto or during WWI, according to Alec Tulkoff in his excellent reference book Equipping The Corps 1892-1937 [The cap is described and pictured at Pages 305-307]. According to Tulkoff, the cap was also worn by members of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade, composed ofMarines from the 6th Marines Regiment, which garrisoned Iceland in 1941-42. According to my inventory records, I purchased this cap from the now defunctMilitary Marketplace on May 8, 1995. The seller termed it the P1906 winter cap, so make your own judgment regarding its origin.

The cap is constructed of forest green heavy wool fabric matching the color of the Marines\' winter uniform, with a combination earflaps/chinstrap, similar to the Army\'s WWI winter field cap. The inside of the cap ismade of the same wool fabricfor additional warm for the wearer\'s head. The ear flapsare secured above the visoror when down around the chin by a 1/2\" wide bias tape tie strings (see images of earflaps in use).I\'ve always wondered about the odd \"pointy head shape\" of these and the similar army caps andall I can guess is that it was designed so snow, sleet and rain would be more easily shed from the cap\'s top. The capboth inside and outis in excellent condition and show no signs of wear or deterioration. In fact, the cap appears to be UNISSUED! The size tag in the inside either reads 6-3/8 or 6-5/8 (see close-up image).

This is a great opportunity for the advanced Marine Corps collector to obtain a rare piece of headgear in very good condition for the collection. The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and a five-day right of inspection privilege and right of return/refund, excluding postage. I can\'t imagine, however, that the buyer wouldn\'t be very satisfied with this rare cap!
