Orvis 125th Aniversary Special Edition 7/4 2 Pc 2 Tip Fly Rod Near Perfect For SaleIn 1981, Orvis celebrated its 125th anniversary. To commemorate this special year in Orvis history, the companymanufacturedin VERY limited quantities a series of rods called the '125 Series.' This rod, completed inMarchof 1981 is one of the few 125s made. It has never been fishing. It has lived in the original rod sack in the original rod case - stored safely away for the last 32 years - it's in museum-quality condition today.
The cane was selected specifically for this series. It is "Wes Jordan-grade" cane (which indicated uniform rich and even coloration rather than action).
The nickel-silver butt cap is stamped with with word Orvis - the bottom of the butt cap cap has two concentric circles. The reel seat is special and rare Cocabolo - a superhard tropical wood with remarkable detail in the grain. The reel seat is held in place in a section machined into the wood and then secured by a knurled nickel silver ring. The cork grip is the special lightweight "Superfine" shape. In a departure from traditional Orvis guide wrapping style, the wraps (called "sizing" by the ladies in the finishing room) were in a unique lighter brown than normal AND they were set off by subtle red "tip" wraps on either side of the brown wraps. The hook keeper is also a departure from what was then the standard fixed wire (like a differently shaped guide) style. This hook keeper is of the movable ring style reminiscent of the rods of the early 1900s. And the "transition wrap" from the cork grip onto the blank is also a departure from the production norm of the time - this feature is difficult to wrap and was not offered on the standard rods of the time.
The two tips are identical in their dimensions, their wraps, and their actions. Each one of the four sections bears the Serial Number 84984.
The rod bears small black inscriptions on five of the six sides. In order they are C.F. Orvis '125' followed by Orvis Impregnated followed by the rod length and weight 7' 3 3/8 oz. followed by the line designation HFG (4) followed by the owner's name L. Foss.
This seven-foot rod will comfortably and accurately throw a nice tight loop in a WF4F line. The action is on the fast side of medium - what some would call "dry fly action." It will arrive in its original 4-section rod sack in a special extra heavy brushed aluminum case with gold anodized top.
It is guaranteed to be to the buyer's satisfaction.
