Osymetric chainrings are not symmetrical as with other non-round chainrings. The radius of the chainring varies in proportion to the amount of power available from a riders legs at various pedal positions. It looks unusual, but it works. Studies have shown that the power of the leg is two times lower at the top dead centre (TDC) and bottom dead centre (BDC) than available on the power downward strike. The aim of an Osymetric chainring is to reduce the radius of the chainring at TDC and BDC so that it is easier to pedal through these positions and the leg has some time to recover during each pedal stroke.

A 56 teeth Osymetric chainring is equivalent to approximately a 53 teeth round chainring at TDC/BDC and equal to 58 teeth on the downward stroke.

The benefits have already been taken up by a number of riders in the pro peloton with great success.Osymetric chainrings have now won a silver medal at the 2010 World Championships and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games time trials, silver in the 2011 World Championships TT, 2012 Tour de France first and second and 2012 Olympic gold medal in the TT. In 2013 the chainrings again won the Tour de France and first place in the Kona Iron Man race in Hawaii.

My own tests have confirmed the benefits. I tested the Osymetric 50T against a round 50T chainring, with a 5 minute constant power test (at 60% of maximum power). The results were:
1 - Heart Rate on the round chainring at constant power was 5.4% higher than on the Osymetric.
2 - Cadence on the round chainring at a set constant power was 8.7% higher than on the Osymetric.As you can see, using the Osymetric chainring requires substantially less energy to maintain the same power output than on a same size round chainring. Ideal for road, TT or triathlon.
