OTTOMAN TURKISH MARKET Pair Case POCKET WATCH c1790
Antique pocket watch made for the Ottoman Turkish market circa 1790. Movement by Henry Cox of London, the enamel dial marked Mark Wik of London. I am listing this item as circa 1790 but it could be a little earlier.
Fabulous hand painted dial with Islamic style Arabic numerals with hours & minutes. The inner & outer cases are gilt copper or 'Tombak' prized by the Turks during the Ottoman period.
Movement engraved HENy. COX LONDON5134. The enamel dial painted MARKWIKLONDON.
Dial measures 40mm diameter.
The movement will not wind & it is not ticking. The internal gilding is in great condition. The gold plating to both inner & outer cases is very worn revealing the copper below. Sadly the enamel dial has hairline cracks in the surface & the lower right border has a missing section (see photos). The glass has scratching. The release catch to the outer case is damaged & requires attention. The suspension loop is a poor replacement. However, despite these imperfections the overall structural condition is good & this remains a beautiful & rather magical old object.
I apologise for the recent hike in my shipping costs but in an astonishing move Royal Mail have almost doubled their prices for some parcel categories.
PayPal is nice but I am more than happy to accept bank cheques, international money orders & bank to bank wire payments in GB Pounds. For larger purchases I will accept personal cheques in US Dollars but there will be a small charge to cover bank fees, please contact me for details.
