Official President Hayes White House China 1879 Fish Service Plate Rare & N/r:
For the collector's of White House China", here is an offering rarely seen on today's market. It is an 8 3/8" Pompano fish plate from Rutherford B. Haye's first White House order. It has the proper markings on the back, especially the "Limoges Haviland & Co.monogram mark dated 1879 and with Theodore Davis's TD entwined initials. This mark, as well as the Eagle and Shield mark, the Fabrique Par Haviland & Co. d'apres les dessins DE and Theodore R. Davis signature mark, and green printed H & Co. mark as pictured in the "Official White House China 1789 to the Present - 2nd Edition" book by Margaret Brown Klapthor, 1999 are present. An identical plate is photographed on page 108 where it is mismarked as a Spanish mackerel. In the appendix, the publication that Haviland did in 1879 for this service is reprinted in it's entirety. The Pompano is illustrated and described on page 34 of this publication. The service was so expensive to produce that Haviland was given permission by Davis to make services for sale to the public for a period of seven years. They proved quite popular and generally these are the pieces that come onto today's market and are collected as White House China. They bring very good money just the same. Our piece was actually used in the White House. In the 19th Century, it was the custom to dispose of any cracked, chipped or broken china. Some pieces were given as souvenirs and some wound up at Washington D.C. salesrooms. Most authentic White House China of the early period that is still extant has damage of some sort. Our's is no exception. This plate has been broken in half and professionally "reattached" so that it is sound and rings like a bell when tapped. There are about three rim chips that are hard to see when displayed. There is no overpaint or reglazing, so you can tell exactly what condition it is in. There is also a very tight 1" hairline most easily seen on the back just to the right of the Eagle & Shield. It goes through to the front but is one of those very tight lines that porcelain gets. We purchased this over twenty years ago at an estate sale in Albany, New York. The prior owner was a collector and pioneer dealer who specialized in Historical Blue Staffordshire (she had over 500 pieces), rare early American glass and Americana. Included in this sale were two Abraham Lincoln White House China small platters. Both were broken and had labels stating they belonged to a New York State governor. Renowned collector of all things historical, Paul C. Richards purchased these and had them repaired. When his collection was sold some years later, they brought about $15,000.00 apiece if memory serves me correctly. Our plate has two old paper collector's labels on the back, one of which says "Pres. Hayes". If you want a "real" piece of Hayes White House China for your collection, this may be the one for you. Please view my pictures for further condition and contact me with any questions.
