Sarah Hammer of the USA Cycling Team! From Temecula, CA in 2006 Sarah rode to a gold medal in the Individual Pursuit, becoming the first American in eleven years to capture an elite world title on the track. The next year, she defended that crown, added two more, and cemented her reputation as one of the world’s top endurance cyclists. Sarah was introduced to cycling by her father, Cliff, at the age of eight. She quickly embraced the sport and won her first junior national title in 1995, the same year that Rebecca Twigg became the last American for the next eleven years to win an elite world title on the track. Sarah experienced a remarkable junior career but decided to take a break from cycling at the end of the 2003 season after only racing at the elite level for only a short time. Not intending to come back, she sold most of her equipment, worked various jobs, and took classes. Her plans changed though in 2004 as she watched the Olympic Games and again dreamed of becoming an Olympian. She got back on the bike that fall and has been on an upward spike ever since, becoming the first American woman in twenty years to win back-to-back world titles on the track, scoring seven World Cup gold medals, and becoming a clear favorite to win gold in Beijing. Building on her 2006 on-the-bike success, Sarah founded the American Women’s Track Cycling Fund, an organization devoted to supporting and mentoring America’s future crop of female Olympic track cycling champions. Besides developing her women’s organization, Sarah enjoys also reading, taking classes and hiking with her dogs Samantha and Dakota.
