Old Antique American Usn Naval Navy Officers Sword Saber Lions Head Horstman:
NOTE. 2 members have now told me that this is a Knights of Pythias fraternal sword. I don't know if they are right, but since I'm not sure what it is, and I don't know fraternal swords, I must accept it as a posability. You decide for yourself. The markins on the ricaso are faint and it's hard to see in the picture, bt it reads "HORSTMAN PHILADELPHIA". To the best of my knowlage, Horstman necer made swords for export, so this must be American. Although there are no naval motifs that I can see, the slender, slightly curved blade makes me think that it is a naval officers sword. There are a dew very faint traces of what may have once been engravings on the blade. But nothing you can make out. The blade is darkened, and has some rust spots. The grip is missing all of its wrapping, only the wooden core remains. All metal parts of the hilt are brass. It has a lions head pommel, a knuckle-bow and 2 branches forming a half basket hilt. The knuckle-bow and the branches have floaral decorations. This, if nothing ells tells me that it is an officers sword. The counter guard has what I guess you'd call a sun burst pattern on the blade side. On the inside towards the knuckle-bow, it has a coat of arms with a knights shield, helmet, and crossed halberds. On the quillon there is what looks like a flower, or a ribbon. And on either side are designs that may be letters R & U. Overall length is 37 1/2" blade 32 1/8". Payment is due within 3 days from the end of the sale.
