What we have here are two black ARGILLITE stone carvings of an OLD MAN and an OLD WOMAN in old-time outfits standing beside logs. These unusual and charming sculptures are beautiful pieces of hand carved art. There is lots of skilled detail and fine craftsmanship... just look at the faces and the fine detail to carve the canes they each hold... and the very detailed hatchwork pattern carved into the tops of the platforms on which the figures stand... each figure with base is carved from a single piece of argillite, the bases are not attached, they are created as whole.They look like old style Northwest Coast Haida trade carvings I've seen in books. Maybe Euro-American figures carved to trade with sailors etc? They look like bookends. I do not know the exact date of the creation... there are small scratches, chips and scuffs that indicate age. The nose of the man is chipped a bit. To me they look like older carvings. I am starting this sale at $9.95 with to make it exciting for everyone. I am happy to offer you the opportunity to touch and hold history... look at the photos and you decide to your best judgment what these are worth... the starting price is cheap so you may get them for a bargain! These well made unusual carvings have a great display presence at 6 1/2 inches tall for the man and 6 inches tall for the woman and about 3 inches wide and 1 3/4 inches deep for each of them.
