Welcome to our sale. You are invited to offer on these rare and beautiful tiny Chinese Lady's "Lotus" (bound feet) shoes or slippers. These beautiful examples were obtained from a local estate and have been carefully packed away for many years. They measure about 5" high and about 4 3/4" from the sole heal to the tip of the toe. Finely made of multi-colored embroidery on silk, they have been very well preserved. We believe that these shoes date from the late 19th century to the early 20th century (Chinese Republic Period). The practice of binding the feet of hyound girls is described in the famous book The Good Earth, by Pearl Buck and can be viewed in photos #7 & #8. The thinking of that period in Chinese History was that tiny feet were very beautiful on women, and so many endured this practice. These fine old "Lotus" shoes will make an excellent historical addition to any collection.
