יואל טננבאום, הגיע ארצה ב- 1920 מלודז\' ונרשם ל\"בצלאל\" ב- 1921.

כי עתה מצא האמן בן ה- 32 את פרנסתו בסיתות אבנים בירושלים.

ב- 1923 נסע לפאריז ושנתיים מאוחר יותר חזר הישר לגדוד העבודה,

שעסק אז בהקמת קיבוץ תל-יוסף שבעמק יזרעאל.

גם עתה עבד האמן החלוץ באבנים.

חברותו בתל-יוסף לא מנעה השתתפותו בתערוכות שונות,

בהן ב\"מגדל דוד\" (1926, 1928).

כשעזב את הקיבוץ והשתקע בירושלים שב יואל טננבאום

(עתה הוא כבר קרוי \"טנא\") לעיסוק בסתתות, ובתוקף מומחיותו,

גם עזר לאברהם מלניקוב לסתת את הסלע של אנדרטת האריה השואג בתל-חי.

אמנות וסיתות אבנים היו אפוא מרכז חייו של יואל טננבאום - טנא.

וכך, ב- 1932 הוא נמנה על מסתתי קישוטי האבן

לבניין ימק\"א בירושלים (מעצב ראשי: זאב רבן).

ב- 1934 הוא כבר הפך שותף בבית החרושת לחיתוך אבן

בבית-וגן, ירושלים; ומאוחר יותר, עד צאתו לגמלאות,

עבד בבית החרושת לאבנים במוצא, \"אבן וסיד\".

הגוונים החמים של הציור, ארגונו הנפחי והמושטח בעת בעונה אחת ובעיקר –

הסגנון הזוויתי הנחרץ של הסתת מאפיינים את ציוריו. (גדעון עפרת)
